The Swift Performance Youth Track and Field team, headed by Coach Gary Sumpter, returned home from the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held in Greensboro, North Carolina from June 27th to July 2nd at North Carolina A & T University. Track clubs from nearly all of the 50 states came to compete in 5 age groups: Bantam (9 -10 yrs), Midget (11 - 12 yrs), Youth (13 -14 yrs), Intermediate (15 - 16 yrs), and Young Men and Women (17 - 18 yrs). After over 3,000 athletes from 45 - 50 different clubs compete, all the athletes from Swift Performance managed to place in the top 8 medalist. Leading the way were the Youth Boys, Jesse Brooks, Stephen Rivas, David Showalter, and Henry Vildosola, who placed first in the 4 X 800 meter relay making them this years National Champions. Henry Vildosola placed in a total of three events (relay, high jump, and pentathlon). |
| The Midget Boys were just as impressive, placing 5th in their 4 X 800 meter relay, with a season best time of 10:39.24, beating their old mark by an amazing 24 seconds. The relay was made up of Adrieene Jackson, Jaron Johnson, Billy Looney, and Ross McBride. Bantam athlete, Nathaniel Slaney, placed 3rd in the mini javelin and 4th in the shot put. For the ladies, Kiersten Kirlkland was a multiple winner in 3 events, the 4 X 400 relay, long jump, and 400 meter hurdles in the Intermediate Girls division. Kristina Kirkland's Youth Girls 4 X 800 relay also took an impressive 1st place overall. Athletes went on to compete at the California State Games held in San Diego July 14-16. Kiersten Kirkland, Kristina Kirkland and Henry Vildosola travel this upcoming week to compete at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics held in Baltimore, Maryland. | |
